VMWare scales DOWN virtualization technology

VMWare has recently released news regarding their approach to entice smaller clients. Now offering a smaller package. This package offers the same great support that VMware is known for, but at a price smaller businesses can swallow. Here is the specs of the new offer to medium sized businesses:

Entry level bundle includes a free download of the VMware Server software for virtualizing servers and a US$1,500 support plan called Virtual Center.

This will be a more manageable match for SMB clients, who normally couldn’t afford the previous price tag of $5000 for the same package. With the recent release of free converters from physical to virtual technology there are less reasons why SMB’s shouldn’t try virtualization. If you are looking to purchase a new server, it might be a great time to try out virtualization. Instead of dedicating that box completely to database or e-mail, why not virtualize it and let it do everything.

Anyone familiar with the VMWare family knows that the VMware server runs ontop of a full distribution of either linux or windows, and then runs full virtual machines inside of the environment. This is slightly different then the other products they offer which install on bare metal boxes. Their other products such as ESX include their own operating system, allow more hardware resources left to dedicate to the virtual machines.
